Travelling with your dog is a great way to make memories while exploring new destinations. You can travel with your dog locally or internationally – depending on your destination’s pet rules.
There are many pet-friendly countries, accommodations and activities around the world. Here are our tips on how to travel with a dog.
Tips for Traveling with your dog

Prepare
You need to make car rides a regular activity for them used to the car. This way, they won’t associate your car solely with trips to the vet, which is likely to cause anxiety and distress.
Safety First
The safest way for your dog to travel in the car is in a crate that has been anchored to the vehicle using a seat belt or other secure means. Dog restraints or seat belts are useful for preventing your dog from roaming around the car and being a distraction to the driver, but they haven’t been reliably shown to protect dogs during a crash.
Your dog should never sit in the front seat. If you have an accident and your airbag deploys, it could cause serious harm to your pet. Airbags are designed to protect humans, not animals, who are smaller and lighter and could be injured by the force of the airbag.
Make sure your dog is cool. Open a window, turn on the AC and stop for a break so your dog can stretch their legs.
Make sure your dog is clean pre-trip
A pre-trip spa day is a great way to make sure your pup is groomed – nails trimmed and hair not too long before a trip.
The Dog Broker offers in-home dog grooming services in Pretoria and Johannesburg. We will ensure your dog’s teeth are brushed, nails chipped and hair is trimmed to perfection.
